Every August 17th, the Indonesian people celebrate Independence Day with great enthusiasm. Flag ceremonies, competitions, and various cultural performances symbolize gratitude for the freedom our heroes fought for. However, amidst the celebratory fervor, one question deserves our reflection: are we truly independent ?
Independence historically meant freedom from foreign colonial rule. However, in the modern era, the meaning of independence has expanded much broader. It is no longer just a physical and territorial issue, but also encompasses freedom of thought, expression, access to a decent education, a life without discrimination, and even economic independence.
The facts on the ground show that many Indonesians still have not fully enjoyed the meaning of independence. Social inequality, poverty, unequal access to education and healthcare, and deep-rooted corruption are new forms of “colonialism” that hinder the nation’s progress.
On the other hand, technological developments and the rapid flow of information also bring new challenges: colonialism in the form of hoaxes, cyberbullying, and dependence on foreign digital platforms.Therefore, today’s spirit of independence must be interpreted as a determination to continue fighting for social justice for all Indonesian people, as stated in the preamble to the 1945 Constitution.
We all have a role—whether as students, workers, entrepreneurs, or state officials—to fill independence with positive and productive things. Independence is not just about remembering the past, but also about building the future.
